What Makes Glass "Toughened"
Toughened glass starts as ordinary annealed glass, cut to the exact size needed, then reheated in a furnace to roughly 620°C and rapidly cooled with jets of air. This process, called quenching, puts the outer surfaces of the glass into permanent compression while the core stays in tension. The result is glass that is four to five times stronger than annealed glass of the same thickness, more resistant to thermal stress, and — most importantly for homes and offices — engineered to break safely.
We source float glass in 8mm, 10mm and 12mm thicknesses depending on application, and every panel is cut, drilled and edge-polished before toughening, because toughened glass cannot be cut, drilled or altered afterward without shattering.
